A Trim Router That Tops Them All
Bosch's Brushless Colt Palm Router is precise, ergonomic, and features a large opening in the base for unmatched visibility.
While completing my review of cordless trim routers (FHB #316), I really liked the Bosch 12V router for its exceptional ergonomics and wished they had an 18V contender. So, when I learned Bosch had introduced an 18V cordless router, I had to try one out. Although I didn’t need another router, I recalled some sage advice from Gary Streigler—“The number of routers you need is n+1, where n equals the number of routers you currently have”—and I took the plunge.
The new Bosch 18V router is closely related to its highly acclaimed 120V corded cousin, the Bosch Colt, hence the name Bosch Brushless Colt Palm Router. Since I owned the corded Colt, it was a nice surprise when I discovered that my Colt attachments, including the laminate trimming base, plunge base, template guides, and edge guides I had accumulated over the years, were compatible.
An Unrivaled Router
After spending an afternoon plowing through hard maple, the Bosch 18V earned first place amongst my cordless routers. My hand naturally slides into the ergonomic, well-positioned groove in the motor housing, and the rubber coating ensures a good grip even with sweaty hands.
The depth adjustment knob, which moves in precise 1/64-in. increments, is located at the bottom of the base, which makes it unlikely that it will be accidentally jostled into unintentional adjustments. When using the Milwaukee M18 router (my previous cordless router of choice), a misplaced thumb will occasionally scroll the depth-adjustment control.
This stoutly constructed router has two bright LED lights and the largest opening in the base of all cordless trim routers, providing an unmatched view of the bit. Overall, the Bosch 18V Brushless Colt combines ergonomic design, precise control, and excellent visibility to deliver a top-tier cordless routing experience that’s hard to beat.
