Spray foam is a great invention, but it's not always necessary.

He’s building a house in climate zone 6a, and everyone he speaks to encourages him to use spray foam throughout the home. So much so that Jim is “convinced they put it on their breakfast cereal.”
To start, he wonders why a contractor would want to use closed-cell spray foam under a roof deck if the space is not conditioned. Next, he asks if it makes sense to flash and fill a wall assembly comprised of LP SmartSide, rainscreen, Zip R-9, 2x6s, a smart vapor retarder, and drywall with 1.5- to 2-in. closed-cell spray foam.
